Why We Begin With How a Room Feels

Most conversations about a home start with how it looks. Ours start a step earlier, with how it feels to walk in: the temperature of the light, the give of the floor underfoot, whether the room asks you to slow down or hurry through.

That is the whole premise of the Sensory Living Method™. Four pillars — Ground, Light, Texture and Rhythm — and a simple test for every decision: does this make the room feel more like itself, or less? A sofa can be beautiful and still wrong for the way a family actually sits in the evening. A paint color can be correct on the chip and cold at seven in the morning.

This journal is where we will think out loud about that, once a week. Some entries will be practical — how to read the light in a room before you buy a single lamp, why we specify natural fibers even where nobody will touch them. Some will be about a project, a material, or a piece we could not stop thinking about. All of them will come back to the same question: what does this home want you to feel, and are we helping it?

Start with how it feels. The rest follows.

Michelle Taylor Interiors & Home

Michelle Taylor Interiors & Home is an interior design studio and home brand based in Austin, Texas.

The studio works from the Sensory Living Method™ — a four-pillar framework of Ground, Light, Texture, and Rhythm, drawn from polyvagal theory, circadian science, neuroaesthetics, and biophilic design. The premise underneath it: a room is something the body reads before the eye does.

Work spans full-service residential interiors, a fourteen-piece pillow collection, and a private trade program.

Because in a world designed for the camera, we design for the nervous system.
